Why do people collect figures from other companies (Owertown, Heels and Faces etc)? I never understood it. Why would you want to get a Dino Bravo, Dynamite Kid, Ahmed Johnson from a line that isn't official WWE licence? To me they just seem like makeshift, stand in figures. Im curious to know why people collect them.

Probably because the talent won't be getting a figure from Mattel anytime soon and the figure is close enough to put into our collections. Personally I stopped caring about collecting just Mattel for the sake of consistency and focused on filling gaps that Mattel has yet to cover of people I really want. I actually find it more fun to see all these different companies putting their names in the hat and seeing their figures mixed in with official figures it looks awesome IMO.

One of my collecting goals was to get a history of wrestling. As complete a roster as a I could. If Mattel cant make someone, I will def entertain other companies to fill in holes. As long as they fit somewhat close to the vast majority of my collection, which is mattel.

Why not? If someone is making a figure of someone you like, you like the style and execution of said figure, and you’re OK with the price, then why wouldn’t you. Unless you have some weird brand loyalty thing going on, why are you limiting yourself to just Mattel figures?

I like Andre so I’ll pick up any figure of him that I like. First couple S7 figs weren’t bad and found em at a discount so I grabbed them. I thought the Mego figure was ugly but in a good way so I picked that up. I don’t particularly care for the Hasbro style but I did like how Zombie’s version turned out so I preordered that.

I currently don’t do this, but my collection is WWE from 1985-now, with an additional WCW shelf. If a company like PowerTown made a Jarrett or Ahmed Johnson even somewhat resembling the current Mattel figures, I would add them. I’d rather have a complete look of each era, even if it’s not Mattel. If AEW made a 93-97 Owen Hart look, I’d be all over that.

I like to have as many characters as I possibly can. If they have a Mattel figure, then that is the one that I'll display. If not, then I'll display the next best version possible (Right now that is Powertown, followed by Jakks). I hope that Mattel eventually replaces all of the Jakks that I own, but that isn't looking likely considering the crazy amount of Jakks characters that were made.
So, for example, my attitude era display. You can't represent the attitude era without guys like Al Snow, Val Venis, Chris Benoit, Steve Blackman, Hardcore Holly, Ivory, Droz etc. So I'm going to put the best possible version of those guys that I have until Mattel gets to them. Right now my display is only Mattel actually cause I don't have enough space to go further but I want to display as many different characters as possible.

Why do people who buy wrestling figures want figures of wrestlers they like? We may never know.

Because for a lot of fans, not everything has to be WWE to be official. A lot of the figures have official licenses from the people who own them. The WWE doesn't own the rights to everyone who's ever passed through their doors.

Also for me, the paint applications used are not the same and next to Mattel figures, it's obvious that they are different.

This is such a bizarre question…
Because we’re collectors of wrestling figures, not just Mattel products.

Why do people who buy wrestling figures want figures of wrestlers they like? We may never know. That's pretty much the whole of it right there. If a company is making a figure of someone I want to own/in a look I want to own, I want said figure. Not much more to it than that.

My 30+ year collection already contains items from the following brands, and I'm sure there are others I'm missing:
* Mattel
* Jakks
* Hasbro
* LJN
* ToyBiz
* Galoob
* Storm
* Jazwares
I'll continue to buy figures that I like, regardless of whatever toy company produced them. Due to my fandom, I also collect Ric Flair figures - but if I limited myself to Mattel Flair figures, my collection would be pretty small. Should I not buy a Ric Flair Pop Vinyl because it wasn't produced by Mattel?
