There are good and bad people everywhere, in every walk of life... just because this happens to be a cop doesn't mean some people should be saying " cops." When an older person, ESPECIALLY one that is a goddamn cop speaks to you, you say "yes sir, no sir" or "yes ma'am, no ma'am." It's called manners, and yeah... I'd say that badge DOES deserve some respect, they go out everyday to keep your ass safe, and a LOT of them die doing it. - Just because this guy happens to be a dick doesn't mean that kid had to be so damn hardheaded.

A-Men. That is my point. No matter what the cop did do the fact is the kid should have been more respectful & most likely it would have ended with out all this shit. And people wonder why kids are so afraid of cops thse days.

No, no ones saying that the kid shouldn't have called him sir. What we're saying is that being a cop doesn't automatically mean you get the pleasure of being called sir
Since the officer started the conversation pleasantly, he should have been called Sir out of COURTESY because he was showing the kids COURTESY by not immediately going off on them and attempting to mediate the situation calmly.
However, that courtesy was thrown right out of the window as soon as he got called "dude" If he had responded to the "dude" comment with, "Please do not address me as dude, I am officer, officer Riverii, or sir" in a calm voice, I believe the kid would have obliged because all of these kids seemed to be listening to what the cop told them to do, except for the one because he couldn't hear him, and even then he explained why.
Cop over-reacted, didn't deserve respect or courtesy thereafter.
Just my 2 cents.
and I regularly call men and women older then me "sir" or "ma'am" and no officer is ever called "sir" its always "officer"

This cop, in this detail and beat was not going out of his way to make anyone safe or risking his life. have you ever been to the inner harbor? its a tourist attraction. the most this guy does is crowd control and chase down the occasional pan handler/theif/purse snatcher...OH SO DANGEROUS! I'll save my respect for the cop who walks the ghetto beat from 7 pm to 7 am and comes out alive each time. and most people in this thread werent saying F cops in general, most (myself included) were saying F THIS COP

I never said just because he was a cop he deserved to be called sir.. now you guys are twising my words. The fact of the matter is this could have all been avoided.. simple as that & really it is the kids fault. A 14 year old kid goes to school and goes home.. that is it while this guy has been working for hours now putting up with dicks all day long. If you had his job.. I don't think you would have been in the best mood by that time. I am not saying what the cop did was right.. that is far from what I am saying but both of them could have handled it better. So, both are at fault in my opinion.

He should have been called sir from the beginning. --For the dude asking if I've been to the "Inner Harbor," no, I haven't. But I have traveled up and down the east coast, and even in New Goddamn Jersey I showed respect to older people, and the in cops. It's not that hard of a concept to understand... and I'll just say for the record, 80% of the people in New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are ALL dicks.

wearing a badge does not earn you the pleasure of being called "sir". you can call a cop "dude" all you would like. theres no other way to look at it. the kid didnt do anything wrong. and when a lawsuit goes down, you will see that the law agrees with that. Wow.. maybe my parents just raised me diffrent than everyone else here & I acutally respect other people enough to say Yes sir and no sir. Im not saying the cop didnt get an attitude but the kid did nothing help himself he should have done like his friends & just stood there & didn't talk unless he was spoken to & THEN explain it to him respectfully. Sorry, I think calling adults dude is disrespectful but that was the way I was raised. hes a 14 year old kid. "dude" is part of his everyday vocabulary, and he probably says it with out intention. it just comes out. ANYONE with common sense would understand that. its not even that disrespectful. the way your talking, you would think the kid called him a slur or insult. in the video I saw, the only person being disrespectful was the police officer. and I was brought up with respect. and I use it. everyday dealing with parents and administrators at the school I work at, I know how to speak to someone respectfully. I also know what speaking to someone disrespectfully is. and a 14 year old saying dude is NOT disrespect. its a 14 year old speaking like a 14 year old.

So, both are at fault in my opinion. I wasn't twisting your words. As to what a 14 year old should be doing with his time, did this occur to you that this happened on the weekend when a 14 year old is well within his rights to go out and enjoy the city/town that he lives in? No, no ones saying that the kid shouldn't have called him sir. What we're saying is that being a cop doesn't automatically mean you get the pleasure of being called sir Where I'm from, you show respect to adults, period. This guy is an adult, and a cop. He should have been called sir from the beginning. And where I'm from you EARN respect. This cop was well on his way to getting respect, until he over reacted to one comment that, in my opinion, wasn't designed to start an altercation. The kid responded with a gut response to an authority figure. The cop said "why didn't you stop" the kid almost immediately responded "dude, I didn't hear you" that sounds like a gut check response while being scared shitless.

Yeah this guy was a complete dick to the kid.....had no reason to overreact in the way he did....I saw that on the local news here in Hagerstown MD......it made it here so.....that guy should have been placed on, at very least, Administrative Leave without Pay until the whole situation got resolved.
And now that I just watched it for a 2nd time without it being choppy.....that cop completely over-reacted and had no right to do so. He completely overstepped his authority, throwing the kid to the ground in the manner he did

When I was 15, I was with my band at the time, in an abandoned house, someone saw us enter, and called the cops. I had NO problem dropping my 'man' and 'dude' vocabulary and addressing the officers as sir. Bottom line, if you can't look at someone in a higher position and muster the word "Sir," you REALLY need your in dome smacked a few times.

Some kids should learn to respect things and people.

im 24yo and "dude" is part of my every day vocabulary. Anytime I'm around an adult or authority figure i use the word "sir" or "ma'am" The problem now days is all these punk ass kids who think they can say or do whatever they want because the First Amendment protects them. If parents would jerk a knot in a kids ass when they act up instead "making them do without" when the do something wrong this world would be a better place. More parents need to stop letting their lil prince or princess wear Hollister, Abercrombie or American Eagle and let them wear an ass whippin every now and then!!!

It is BOTH Of their faults no matter which way you look at it. um, no actually its not. its not the kids fault the cop over reacted to something so petty. thats why the cop is being punished and sued, while nothing happened to the kid. to be a cop, you HAVE to be able to deal with people. and if you cant handle a kid saying "dude" to you without flipping out ... your in the wrong profession.

alls this is about is the cops ego, and the need to overpower someone smaller and weaker then him. I can never understand how people can get so emotional and cause such a commotion over something as petty as this. let it go. its not that deep. he called you dude. oh my. your still getting paid. go catch a murderer or rapist, dont flip out over a kid calling you dude.
