I noticed the Deniro vs. Pacino thread, which by the way IMO DeNiro wins by a landslide, and I decided to created a thread of my own with two actors who are high up on my favorite actors of all time. Johnny Depp so versatile with the roles he picks and how he can transform into these characters is unbelievable. Leo DiCaprio such a talented actor that was catching peoples attention when he was just a teenager, such a gifted actor able to convey emotion unlike any other IMO.
Both have had there bad share of movies and both have had their classics.
Johnny Depp: Edward Scissorhands Edwood Cry Baby Donnie Brosco Pirates(the first one) BLOW(one of the best movies of all time imo) What's eating Gilbert Grape? Sleepy Hollow Finding Neverland Once Upon a Time in Mexico Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Leo Dicaprio: Titanic Romeo+Juliet The Beach(I don't care what anyone says, that was a damn good movie) Gangs of New York What's eating Gilbert Grape? The Departed The Aviator
But if I had to choose the overall better actor I would have to say Johnny Depp gets the nod.
I know this is an odd comparison of actors but I just thought it would be fun to discuss...

Johnny Depp by far. The Pirates' trilogy and Edward Scissorhands were amazing.

Depp. He got his directing buddy long before Leo did, and it paid off.

They're both in my top five, but I prefer DiCaprio.

Yeah you guys are actually wrong, its Leo, who is the best actor out there right now. People forget how boring/terrible movies Depp had before Pirates, I think his last good one was Scissorhands.
Donnie Brasco never got the attention it deserved, it was solid not because of Depp but because of Pacino. Which is another nod to Pacino in the Deniro/Pacino battle. Depp was kinda blah in that movie.
You look at Leo over the last 8 years, compared to Depp, he is better, even with the resurgence of Depp's career. The Departed and Blood Diamond alone are better than any 2 movies Johnny Depp has done.
And honestly, comparing them 2 is tough because they dont take similar roles, if you compared Matt Damon and Leo, that'd make sense.

Depp lost my fan-ness with the Pirates and won it back with Sweeney Todd. Him and Burton always make magic.

I like Depp a lot, and he makes great movies. But Dicaprio is the better actor.

How can you leave Catch Me If you Can and Blood Diamond off of Leo's list?

I like Blood Diamond more than the Departed, and that says a lot considering Im a Boston/Scorcese homer

I really think it depends on the roll.
Depp is more versatile, but sometimes a little too animated.
Leo has been on a roll lately, but I'm still waiting for ONE performance that separates itself form the rest.
For now Depp.

I don't even like Johnny Depp... DiCaprio wins, to me, by a big margin.

Either one really. Both for extremely different reasons. But both are favorites of mines.

Either one really. Both for extremely different reasons. But both are favorites of mines. Pretty much my feelings exactly. Depp always bring this certain strange charm to all his films, the kind of charm that's funny one minute and scares the **** out of you the next minute because you don't know whether he's slightly crazy or full-blown insane. He's also incredibly witty....Depp's charm is all his own, I really don't think anyone else can fully duplicate it. Leo has definitely had some VERY diverse acting roles, and he's proven he can play many characters well. While undeniably chick flicks, Romeo&Juliet was pretty good for what it was, and Titanic must've done something right if it's the highest-grossing movie of all time. Add to this all his more-serious acting roles, which are very powerful in their own right, and you've got a very versatile actor for someone that started out as little more than a standard "blond heartthrob". I like both, a lot, so I really can't choose because they're pretty different as actors go.

People crap on Titanic for being a chick flick, but it is actually a great film.
