Wrestling Observer Newsletter WWE News: WrestleMania reactions, Undertaker/ Umaga feud, Jesse Dalton’s new gimmick
- Backstage reaction to WrestleMania 24 has apparently been very high, and the general feeling is that the show was a success. The performances of both Chris Jericho and Edge from the main event have been praised among many wrestling critics, while the Street Fight between The Undertaker and Umaga has been cited as one of the best street fights in recent years.
- It looks like the Undertaker/ Umaga feud will continue into Backlash, although this is not a guarantee that the two will face each other at the event. Undertaker is not scheduled for any house shows this month, and with the ending to his match at WrestleMania 24 it looks like he may not appear live until the event itself.
- With the release of Festus Dalton it looks like Jesse will be getting a new gimmick. Jesse will be using his real name, Terry Ray Gordy, and as the son of the original Terry Gordy is likely to work a sort of new age Freebird gimmick.
- In contract news, D’Lo Brown and the WWE United States Champion Finlay have singed new one year contact extensions, WWE Women’s Champion Beth Phoenix has singed a new two year extension, and Rey Mysterio has singed on with the WWE for a further three years.

Nice contract extensions there, and a newer age Freebirds could be cool, depending on who is with Gordy.

1st April 2008A video package aired recapping ECW’s side at WrestleMania 24, consisting of the ECW Heavyweight Championship match and the Money in the Bank match. The ECW on Sci-Fi opening video then aired, followed by Joey Styles and Tazz running down tonight’s show. The new ECW Heavyweight Champion Shelton Benjamin made his way to the ring to kick of this post WrestleMania 24 edition of ECW on Sci-Fi. Benjamin spent some time posing with the title, before cutting a promo on how WrestleMania 24 was the most historic event in the history of sports entertainment, because it ushered in the era of Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin was interrupted by former champion CM Punk, who told Benjamin to keep the gold warm, because he is using his rematch clause for a match at Backlash. Drake Younger Def. Stevie RichardsThis was not the squash match many people were expecting, as both Younger and Richards got in their fare share of offence. Younger continued to impress with a mix of technical wrestling and hardcore brawling, and put Richards away with the Drake’s Landing to go two for two in ECW. John Morrison and the Miz made their way to the ring to a less than welcoming reaction from the live crowd. Morrison cut a promo on how he and the Miz had been having problems recently, but that was all over with. Morrison then issued an open challenge to anybody in the back to challenge him. An unknown challenger answered the challenge, and announced that his name is Scott Cabana, but his friends call him Colt. Morrison called him Colt to which Cabana replied “You’re not my friend” and blasted him with a right hand to kick off the match. Scott Cabana Def. John MorrisonAn impressive debut from Scott Cabana. There were a few sections of the crowd who recognized Cabana, and there were a few loud chants in his favor. Cabana had the advantage early on, but Morrison quickly fought back using cheap tactics and quick grapples. Cabana refused to back down, nearly getting the win when he locked in the Inverted Boston Crab. The Miz got up onto the ring apron, causing Cabana to break the hold and argue with Miz. Morrison attempted to rush him from behind, only for Cabana to move, causing Morrison to collide with the Miz. Cabana then connected with the Colt. 45, a double underhook backbreaker drop, for the shock victory. Post match Scott Cabana celebrated with a few members of the crowd while John Morrison and the Miz argued in the ring. The Miz told Morrison that he had made a mistake, to which Morrison responded by punching Miz, knocking him to the mat. Morrison left the ring as Miz held his jaw. A video package aired featuring a man standing in front of American flag. A voice over announced that ‘Mr. USA’ Mike Kruel will debut in ECW next week, ending with “This video package was paid for by the supporters of Mike Kruel. CM Punk V. Elijah Burke went to No ContestA solid main event which saw the former ECW Heavyweight champion clash with the current Intercontinental Champion. The match started off with both men using striking moves, Burke utilizing his boxing skills and Punk connecting with some stiff kicks. The match quickly became heated with both men hitting their signature moves in an attempt to get the pinfall. The ending of the match saw Punk set Burke up for the GTS, only for Burke to escape the move and roll to the outside of the ring. Punk was about to follow him when Shelton Benjamin interfered, blasting him in the back of the head with the ECW Heavyweight Championship. As ECW came to an end Shelton Benjamin stood tall over the unconscious figure of CM Punk, holding up the ECW Heavyweight Championship to the crowd.

Love that you've brought in Drake Younger. Nice that you're building him up after that match with Stevie Richards. Good that Colt Cabana debuted, nice rename too, dislike you for jobbing out John Morrison, though it was just a shock victory. Great main event, oh wait, you're bringing in Mike Kruel too? Awesome.

ECW was awesome. Colt on ECw made me mark. Love that Benjamin is champion now, and i hope you keep that title on him for a long long time, and then move him up to RAW or Smackdown and give him a good push. Shocked to see Cabana beat Morrison, but hey, i hope you push him. He's a funny bastard. and he's talented in the ring. Cant wait to read more of this man.
Drop a Reply to my WWE '07 - '08 please.

ECW was a nice show Rated R. Liked the opener with Shelton and his cocky self. Don't have a clue who Drake Younger is, but atleast you are bringing in some new talent. CABANA! Give him a good push plz. Main Event was pretty good, although I think Punk should be on Raw or SD, he seems to good for ECW.

Mark Henry ReleasedWorld Wrestling Entertainment has come to terms on the release of SmackDown superstar Mark Henry as of April 3rd, 2008. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Wrestling Observer NewsletterWWE News: Rey Mysterio Stable, More on Mark Henry’s release, Scott Cabana- There are plans for Rey Mysterio to be involved with a stable storyline in the coming weeks, possibly after Backlash. Current plans call for Mysterio to lead a revived version of former WCW stable ‘Latino World Order’. Current WWE employees being considered for the stable include Chavo Guerrero, Super Crazy and Mistico, who has yet to debut. - WWE has indeed released Mark Henry. The announcement was made earlier today on WWE.COM, and we can confirm that it is legit. It was decided that both Mark Henry and Big Daddy V are essentially filling the same role, and that only one of them needed to be kept, and it looks like Big Daddy V is sticking around. Big Daddy V has been out of action for the last month as he has been slimming down for his return to the ring. Mark Henry has not been seen in a WWE ring since the Royal Rumble, and has been jobbing at SmackDown house shows recently. - This week on ECW saw the debut of former independent wrestler Colt Cabana, known for his appearances in Ring of Honor and the short lived Wrestling Society X. Cabana wrestled as Scott ‘Colt’ Cabana, and a profile has been put up on him on the ECW roster page, so it looks like Cabana is a permanent member of the ECW roster. - In great news for ECW on Sci-Fi, the show got its highest rating yet this past week.

That's pretty cool adding Colt. The new age LWO sounds sweet. It'd be cool if you got Ricocheet in it. Hopefully you'll push over V now,and bring him back as the Viscera for the Ministry days.

Great ECW man, I loved Cabana's line before the start of the match, and then seeing him win it was great. A morrison/Miz feud would be great if done well. Benjamin/Punk is continuing to go strongly. 63

4th April 2008A WrestleMania 24 recap video aired, focusing on the SmackDown side of the event, with Jericho winning the World Heavyweight title, the Undertaker defeating Umaga before being carried out of the arena, and Montel Vontavious Porter winning the Money in the Bank match. The SmackDown opening video then aired, followed by Michael Cole and new SmackDown color commentator Max Bretos, who ran down tonight’s card. The new World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho made his way to the ring to kick of SmackDown. Before he entered the ring he pointed at his father at ringside, and hugged him before entering the ring. Jericho cut a promo on how Sunday night was the greatest night of his career, because he won the World Heavyweight championship at the biggest event in sports entertainment in front of all of his fans. Jericho then promised to be a fighting champion, when ‘Metalingus’ hit the speakers and former World champion Edge walked out onto the ramp. Edge told Jericho that he doesn’t deserve the title, and that losing the title has awakened something inside of Edge that nobody wants to see. Edge then promised that he is going to show exactly what he means later tonight. Before his upcoming match Jesse Dalton announced that he was sick of being a joke to everybody, and that from now on he will be known by his real name, Terry Ray Gordy, and will show everybody exactly what he can do. Terry Ray Gordy Def. Shannon MooreA solid cruiserweight match that was really used to show Gordy as dominant. Gordy displayed a number of new moves here, including a series of running knee drops. Moore attempted to get into the match, and at time looked close to getting the win, only for Gordy to connect with the Tiger Suplex for the win. Post match Gordy delivered another Tiger Suplex to an unconscious Moore, followed by a big running knee drop to the back of Moore’s skull. A video package aired, showing a man sitting in a Hollywood director’s chair. He tells people that “there can only be one Hollywood Mercury, and he, is coming to SmackDown”. Big Daddy V Def. Chuck PalumboBig Daddy V debuted as a SmackDown superstar tonight, and there was a notable difference in his physique, having lost a fair bit of weight during his time off. Palumbo never looked like winning, as he was completely overpowered by Big Daddy V, who destroyed Palumbo with a massive splash, and finished him off with the Ghetto Drop. Rey Mysterio made his way to the ring to a chorus of boos. Mysterio grabbed a microphone and said that he bets everybody is happy that he lost to Batista last night at WrestleMania 24, which got a big cheer from the crowd. Mysterio cut a promo on how minorities are being held back on SmackDown, and how soon enough, everything will change, and the Latino Nation will rise again. Mysterio left the ring, with nobody quite sure what he meant. Matt Sydal, Kazarian & D’Lo Brown Def. Mike Mondo, Deuce N’ DominoA solid match six man tag match, and there seems to be two separate feuds building between the competitors here. Mondo kicked off the match insulting Brown, only to receive a dropkick to the jaw. The match was pretty back and forth, although there wasn’t anything spectacular other than the moves Sydal & Kazarian connected with towards the end of the match. D’Lo got the pinfall on Mondo following the Lo Down for the win. A video package aired showing a graveyard, and Paul Bearer standing in the centre, holding an urn. Bearer talked about how the Undertaker has found a new purpose in life, to punish the sinners. Bearer announced that the Undertaker will return to the WWE soon. Kenny Dykstra Def. BatistaA great match that really saw Kenny Dykstra step up and put on an excellent performance. Batista thought that this was going to be an easy win, but Dykstra took everything Batista could throw at him and hit back just as hard. Batista focused on using his power to gain control, and it was working until Dykstra escaped a Batista bomb and connected with a dropkick to the back of Batista’s head. Batista fought back, and looked close to winning when the music of Rey Mysterio hit. The distraction allowed Dykstra to roll Batista up from behind for a shock win. Mr. Money in the Bank Montel Vontavious Porter made his way to the ring, with his custom briefcase handcuffed to his wrist. MVP grabbed a microphone, and spent several minutes praising how he is now guaranteed a future world title shot, and how he is looking for the most profitable moment to cash it in. MVP then turned his attentions to United States Champion Finlay, and told Finlay to turn up next week, as he has a proposition for him. Edge Def. Matt HardyAn excellent main event between two wrestlers who have great chemistry. Both Edge and Matt really worked their hardest to put on a great match, and the crowd was red hot. Edge took the offence early on with a series of chops, but Matt fought back with chops of his own, and the match pretty much continued in this style, with both men hitting everything they could. Matt attempted to finish Edge off with the Twist of Fate, but Edge reversed it by pushing him into the corner turnbuckle, and followed up with the Spear for the win. Post match Edge left the ring and grabbed two steel chairs, throwing them into the ring. He then grabbed Chris Jericho’s father from behind the barricade and dragged him into the ring. As Jericho’s father got to his feet he was met with a spear, before Edge threw his head onto one of the chairs. Edge set Jericho’s father up for the Con-Chair-To, only for Jericho to walk onto the ramp, shouting at Edge to stop. Jericho told him that he accepted the challenge for a match at Backlash, just to let his father go. Edge began to lower the chair, only to lift it and slam it onto the head of Chris Jericho’s father. Jericho ran to the ring as Edge rolled out of the other side. Jericho checked on his father, screaming for the medical team while Edge walked up the ramp with a sick sadistic grin on his face.

Liked the opening Promo by Chris Jericho. Cool to see Jesse not as Jesse. Loved the 6-man tag team match. Sydal is so awesome. And I am glad his team picked up the win. Matt/Edge as Main Event was ok. Edge picking up the win was a bit predictable but atleast Matt got to main event SD. The ending was really cool and written well. I am liking this Jericho/Edge feud so far man.

7th April 2008The RAW opening video package aired, followed by Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler plugging tonight’s card. The duo of Randy Orton & Mr. Kennedy make their way to the ring to kick off the show, much to the displease of the live crowd. Orton & Kennedy spent several minutes talking about how they took out Shawn Michaels, and that now they are the rightful challengers to the WWE Championship. At that moment John Cena’s music hit, and Cena made his way onto the ramp. Cena told Orton & Kennedy that if anyone deserves a title shot, it is him. RAW general manager William Regal interrupted the argument, and announced that next week there will be a fatal four way match to determine the number one contender, but tonight the four men involved will be in tag team action – Randy Orton & Mr. Kennedy V. John Cena and… Shawn Michaels! Umaga Def. Super CrazyA good match for the first several minutes, but after that it just turned into Umaga destroying Super Crazy. Crazy got in some fast offence in the early parts of the match, but Umaga quickly gained momentum, and finished the Luchadore off with the Samoan Spike. Following the match Umaga continued beating down on Super Crazy when the lights went out, and a static video package played on the screen, with the words ‘Sins will be Judged’ appearing. The lights came back on with Umaga screaming towards the ramp way. Tori Def. MelinaA surprisingly good match as the newcomer Tori showed some impressive skills in her second WWE match. Melina kept control of the match through her experience edge, but Tori showed that she won’t back down to anybody, and shocked everybody when she pinned Melina following a top rope crossbody. A video package aired, showing two men playing pool in a bar, while drinking beers. Another man bumped into one of the men, who broke a pool cue over his head, only saying “Pass me another cue” to the taller man. The words “America’s Most Wanted are coming to RAW” appeared on the screen. Lance Cade Def. Hardcore HollyLance Cade’s impressive streak continued here, with another strong performance here. Both men went at it with stiff blows, and at one point Cade blasted Holly with an elbow that nearly took Holly’s head off. Holly continued on with the match, with blood pouring from his nose. Holly attempted to make a comeback, but Cade picked up even more momentum, finishing Cade off with the Lariat. Backstage Hardcore Holly is holding an ice bag to his nose when Randy Orton and Mr. Kennedy walked up to him, laughing about his loss to Lance Cade. Holly told Orton to put his money where his mouth is, but Orton told him that he has more pressing things to think about, before the two walked off laughing. Trevor Murdoch Def. CarlitoIt looks like Murdoch is in for a push, as he came out with completely new attire tonight, reminiscent of Dusty Rhodes old gear, and being introduced as ‘The Texas Dream’ Trevor Murdoch. The crowd quickly got behind Murdoch during the match, and he paid them back with one of his best performances yet, using an old school style to catch Carlito off guard. Carlito put on one hell of a fight, and the match went back and forth between the pair until Murdoch hit the Diving Bulldog from the top rope for the surprising win. RAW cut backstage to John Cena, getting ready for the main event. The WWE Champion Triple H walked up to Cena, and told him that he had better win next week, so he can get taught a lesson in respect. Cena told Triple H that the only person who needs to learn some respect is the WWE champion. Cena promised to win the fatal four way next week, and told Triple H that he will see him at Backlash. Randy Orton & Mr. Kennedy Def. John Cena & Shawn MichaelsA superb main event, and the largest pop of the night was easily for Shawn Michaels, while the self proclaimed Revolution received massive heel heat. Michaels went straight for Kennedy, and from the looks of things just wanted to kill both Orton & Kennedy. All four men got in their fair share of the offence, and there wasn’t one point that anybody could guess who was going to get the win. The ending stretch saw all four men brawling in and around the ring when Triple H walked out onto the ramp. The distraction allowed Orton to connect with the RKO on Cena, and get the pinfall while Kennedy held Michaels foot, stopping him from entering the ring. Post match Shawn Michaels laid Mr. Kennedy out on the outside of the ring with a superkick, before entering the ring and delivering another superkick to Orton. RAW came to an end with Shawn Michaels staring at the bodies of Mr. Kennedy and Randy Orton.

Good Raw. Who is Tori? The one that used to be with X-Pac or a different one I'm guessing? Cool to see Orton plant Cena with the RKO and pin him. I like how you're doing viginettes for AMW. It'll be cool to see them in. Please reply to my divas show

WWE News: Abyss Signs for WWE, Holly in even more trouble, Trevor Murdoch- In big news, World Wrestling Entertainment has signed Chris ‘Abyss’ Parks to a written contract. Abyss, formerly working for Total Non Stop Action, is expected to debut on the ECW brand within the coming weeks, likely to be using some form of his Abyss gimmick. There has been some talk of him aligning himself with James Mitchell’s “Devil's Rejects” stable. - Bob ‘Hardcore’ Holly is in even more trouble backstage following this week’s edition of RAW. Holly purposely stiffed Cade during the early parts of his match, but it was Cade who got the last laugh when he broke Holly’s nose with a stiff blow of his own. The entire backstage area are pretty much in a agreement that Holly deserved what he got, and it doesn’t look like he will be around much longer. - Trevor Murdoch debuted his new gimmick on last night’s RAW, working as ‘The Texas Dream’ Trevor Murdoch. The gimmick is obviously a take on Dusty Rhodes gimmick, and it looks like Murdoch is in for a big push over the coming months.

Raw was a good show.
Like the pairing of Orton & Kennedy, they work well together. Fatal Four Way next week should be great and I hope either Orton or Cena gets the win.
Good squash for Umaga. Hope he gets a push in the future. After the match with the message was pretty good and look forward to seeing more of it.
Not a fan of Melina losing but that's probably only because I have no idea who Tori is. Hoe Melina doesn't get lost on Raw after this loss.
Cant wait for AMW to debut. So glad you are bringing them in and I hope they become Tag Champs.
Good win for Cade, his being built up nicely. Glad Holly got a broken nose for his trouble and I hope you release him soon as he just causes trouble.
Like Murdoch's new gimmick and sounds like a good match with Carlito. Hope you start a Cade vs. Murdoch feud soon as I could see that going really well. Murdoch for IC Champ.
Main Event sounded great. Orton & Kennedy getting the win is good as was HBK laying them all out afterwards. Could have been interesting to have a stare down between HHH & HBK as well though since he is in the Fatal Four Way match. I really hope though that Orton or Cena wins so then Kennedy can face HBK or something.
Overall good show that seemed to be just the beginning of a lot of things that will happen on Raw. Look forward to see all the storylines develop further next week.

8th April 2008The ECW opening package aired, followed by Joey Styles & Tazz running down tonight’s show, which features a big tag team main event between the team of CM Punk & Jeff Hardy taking on Shelton Benjamin & Elijah Burke. The show kicked off with the debuting Mike Kruel, who made his way to the ring draped in the American flag. Most of the audience couldn’t tell whether to cheer or boo. Kruel cut a pretty entertaining promo about how he is a real American and that he is “The People’s Choice”. Kruel plays his gimmick to perfection, and could be a pretty big heel for WWE in a year or two. Mike Kruel Def. Kofi KingstonKruel backs up his big words with some big moves, completely outwrestling Kingston. Kruel seems to mix excellent technical wrestling skills with smash mouth brawling, and finished an outmatched Kingston with the Kruel Intentions, which looks like an Inverted facelock Neckbreaker. John Morrison & The Miz were out next, and cut a great promo on Scott Cabana, and how young punks should learn some respect for the professionals (There was a lot of laughter from this comment). The Miz challenged Cabana to a match right here right now, and Cabana answered the challenge by charging to the ring. Scott Cabana Def. The MizThe fastest rising star in ECW continues his run tonight with an entertaining match with the Miz. Cabana is extremely fun to watch, as he mixes great moves with some fun antics. There was a lot of tension between Morrison and the Miz, and the two ended up arguing, and Miz turned around straight into a kick to the guts by Cabana, who followed it up with the Colt 45 for the win. ECW cut to James Mitchell, Raven and Mordecai backstage in a dark room. Mitchell cut a cryptic promo about how they have brought the biggest monster from hell straight to ECW. A big man walked out from the shadows, which a few people recognized as Chris ‘Abyss Parks. Mitchell then announced that The Abyss is coming to ECW. CM Punk & Jeff Hardy Def. Shelton Benjamin & Elijah BurkeAn incredible main event that really got the crowd amped up, and could very well be the best tag team match of the year so far. All four men got in some exciting moves, but it was the exchanges between Benjamin and Hardy that were the most spectacular to watch. Burke began taunting Jeff, so Benjamin slapped him as a legal tag and just walked off as the crowd laughed at Burke and Punk shouted at Benjamin. Burke was still shocked at the slap that he failed to stop Jeff Hardy coming up behind him, and Jeff connected with the Twist of Fate for the pinfall. As ECW on Sci-Fi came to an end Shelton Benjamin stood at the top of the ramp holding the ECW Heavyweight championship as CM Punk stared at him, pointing at the title.

Ashley ReleasedWorld Wrestling Entertainment has come to terms on the release of SmackDown Diva Ashley as of April 11, 2008. WWE wishes Ashley the best in all future endeavors. WWE News: Cabana’s selling, More on Ashley Departure, More...- In an interesting note despite only debuting on the 1st of April Scott ‘Colt’ Cabana is already selling a great deal of merchandise for the WWE. This, along with the fact that he is well liked by fans and the booking team alike could mean that he will be in for a big push in the future. - Ashley was released from her WWE contract early this morning, and thus will not be on tonight’s live Smackdown. Ashley was seen as expendable by near enough everyone backstage, and she wasn’t well liked, so her release hasn’t come as a surprise. Current plans call for Matt Sydal to get a new manager in the coming weeks, and the WWE have been in contact with indepentant manager Lizzy Valentine. - Despite SmackDown picking up a disappointing rating last week WWE are still happy that ratings have been improving since the show went live. It seems that fans are really getting into the ‘anything could happen’ vibe of the live Smackdown shows. - WWE has signed Chuck Taylor to a development contract.
