I avoided Mattel figures for a long time due to the size of my CS collection. I wish Mattel would do a Legend figure of the month subscription like they did with Masters of the Universe. They could do really obscure figures mixed with more mainstream guys with a Sub exclusive that you can only get by subscribing. The rest of the figures would just go on sale on Mattel's site each month. The more popular characters could help with the less known Legends. I like this idea in theory - but a similar thing was tried before with the Matty Legends (Andre, DDP, Bundy etc.)... and bill said NO-ONE bought them (so much so, that they had to move Miss Elizabeth to a regular Flashback instead). Maybe things have changed and there'd be more interest - but I think the higher prices and shipping might put a lot of people off... I remember, I bought those but the lineup was really, really weak. They should hold out some bigger names -- like Hollywood Hogan, more Savage, Warriors, etc to help prop up the sub. I know this won't happen as the line is slowly dying but I would love it. -- I actually look forward to the day when you can "print on demand" different figure parts. With 3D printer capabilities getting cheaper and better, toy companies will move to this print-on-demand and maybe then we could get a Valentine, or Dino Bravo.

I was a huge Legends collector and sold them all off. But, basically, Mattel had an opportunity to do a Legends line, and they decided to use rather uninteresting characters or popular characters in attire that no one wanted to see. So, with the exception of few (Austin), the first two Series of Legends just rotted on pegs. Eventually Mattel decided to release them mail order only, and gave us the most boring list of guys. So, within a year, that line was cancelled too. And unfortunately, that kinda set a bad tone for the full on Legends Series. They have done some good stuff with the Flashbacks, Defining Moments, and other exclusives.

I keep hearing this argument that the lineups were weak or that the attires were bad. Outside of sgt slaughter and Snuka I don't know what attires were poorly thought out or how they could be improved. I assume the thinking was that they would release multiples of each character and that there would be repaints. I don't think bill thought that that would be the only Snuka he would make.
I think they misjudged the demographic and went golden era heavy and went after the jakks collector.
The first 6 waves of legends figures I thought were great outside of the rock, ,Eddie Guerrero, stone cold, Pillman and davey boy which were all figures I skipped because I have zero interest in the attitude era.
The mistake was going golden era first, if they went heavy wirh the attitude era first then I bet we'd of got a longer run of the legends line.

Supposedly, WWE told them to focus on the current roster because the talent wasn't being released fast enough. So, complain to them.

I would release 4 sets a year (Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter). Each set would contain 4 figures. 80s wrestler, 90s wrestler, 1/2 Tag team & special flashback which could be something that might not sell well like Billy Graham or a flashback of a current guy like a Cena or Triple H.
Id continue with 2 HOF sets per year (spring & fall) and scrap the HOF 2 packs which have flopped.
TNF sets would be knocked down to 2 figures per set (Then & Now) released opposite of HOF sets (Summer & Winter)
That would give us roughly 20 Legends per year as well as spreading them out over multiple eras.

I mean, you'd still have to allocate resources including production time/space to making those figures that could be instead used for pumping out the main line quicker.

There won't be another Legends line. There's to many different lines as it is that they are probably biting into each other's sales. Having 1 or 2 FB per wave was probably the best formula to make everybody (retailers, collectors and kids) happy.

If it did, we'd be on Legends series 35 or something by now, instead of it dying at series 6. Then dying again as an Internet exclusive.

Its a pitty they dont, Ive found myself going back buying Jakks CS from the 70s because Mattel dont seme to be releasing hardly anything from that era minus Bruno and The Wild Samoans. Ive been watching the old school videos on the network and while you need to re-adjust to a more slower pace from that era I really appreciate it now and have become a fan of those matches back then, Ive watched all the videos from the 70s on the network. Alot of these wrestlers would be cheap to make, their attire is very basic, boots and trunks for the most part, there really cant be much new tooling needed so I still think its realistic to think that these can be incorporated into the elite waves for future releases especially since alot of these old timers must be on legends deals and we are running short on flashback releases lately. I think now is a good time to put some of these guys out. Ernie Ladd, Billy Graham, Bob Backlund, Zybysko, Patera, Strongow and Whitewolf, Fuji and Tanaka. Its a shame these guys are being ignored by Mattel. You can make excuses for Mattel but I really feel these wrestlers could be easily made because alot of new tooling just isnt needed. They should be cheap to make. Yea...like this figure would cost much to make. Give us our 70s wrestlers Mattel and stop with the excuses, about a core 8-10 guys from that era and we'll be happy, we arent asking for much!

I'm watching a lot of old school stuff too and would definitely like a Graham, Backlund, Ladd and Patera. But I'm probably going to be getting a lot of Jakks figures now, which seems like a big step backwards.

That was the early 2010's, the worst economic environment since the 1930's. Things have improved since then. The flashbacks sell and they are bringing back Entrance Greats as well. If they are busy with current talent then maybe try again in a few years. The contract runs through 2021 after all.

These need to be included with regularity for a multitude of reasons. Why have the WWE Network and all of the video games, books from the past without honoring them with figures from the ultimate line? Whether they come out as one a month on-line? one or two in each elite line? A legends line on their own? Somehow it should be done. At minimum ... I would have Mattel do concept art or a figure and then offer it on-line. I think Virgil will do well and he wasn't even a main stream character. How would Harley Race, Billy Graham, Haku, Steiner's, Greg Valentine etc do? Let's do it

I am curious why it takes so long to get The Hardy Boys out, Goldberg, and Kurt Angle etc and newer figures so if that is why legends are slowing down it makes sense ... but wish they were included. That is why I have not been so keen on the last few elite lines. No legends and virtually nothing new.

I think there are a number of issues and if I'm honest I'm kind of Ok waiting for that "guy" or "Girl" I want in my collection. It makes me want them even more, look how long we've had to wait for Piper for example?
I also believe that the it all comes down to money, Mattel are a business and if they don't sell then they won't make. So it means they need to put in a Savage or Warrior to make a bit of money that's why they do it. Kids that want figures won't know who superstars form the 80's, 90's and early 2000's even are they aren't going to be interested in buying flashbacks they are mostly for us, collectors and older peeps that have been watching for many years and on the whole I got to say that I think Mattel have done a pretty good job with the flashbacks, I've got mostly all the big names from the 90's in my collection who is worth having as a figure. Hulk Hogan, Lex Lugar, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, Ultimate Warrior, Jimmy Hart, IRS, Ted Dibiase, Earthquake, Typhoon, Nasty Boys, Legion of Doom, Diesel, Goldust, Billy Gunn, Road Dogg, X-Pac, Mr Perfect, British Bulldog, Mankind, Undertaker, Ric Flair, Yokozuna, Razor Ramon, The Rock, Triple H and Steve Austin to name a few. I get there are still superstars missing, Roddy Piper, Steiner Brothers but like I said I am happy to wait for these.
I've also mentioned in another post, there seems to be massive issues with the HOF line for what ever reasons but I don't believe that is down to Mattel. I much prefer Mattel over Jakks so much so that I've put all my Jakks figures away now and only display Mattel. There is no easy solution and it's all about getting the balance right demand meets profit!

I think if Mattel tried a legends line again, it'd do well. The economy's better, there is a bigger market for legends out there, especially with the advent of The Network and the like. The only spanner in the works is having WWE as a middleman instead of doing like Jakks did and going to the wrestler/estate to get permission for a figure. That and the lawsuit puts a huge damper on things as well.

Seems like way too many people have the philosophy "Release figures I want, and the line will be successful" and "If I want them, everyone else does too". I'm sorry but it just doesn't work that way. Easy to tell someone how to run a business when it isn't your money.
Here within a few months will be getting Goldberg, Angle, Hardy's and I'm sure several more. My local Walmart currently has Berserker, Shamrock, & Warlord on the shelves. We have a HOF line at Target. A TNF line at Walmart. The return of Entrance Great. Defining Moments. We'll still be getting Legends, just going to have to be patient a bit.

I wish HOF wasn’t specific to Target. Release 4 sets a year and I’d be happy. But as the op said it would be better if they just branded it a flashback or legends line so we could get dudes who aren’t in the hall of fame yet. HOF on amazon would be sick.
