Back in January or February of 2001, I was 8 years old and remember seeing the image of the SmackDown Real Sounds Arena on the back of the box of one of my new figures. I thought it looked so damn cool and I really wanted to have it! I asked my mum if I could possibly get it for my birthday and she said she would think about it and then soon enough agreed to get it for me. I was ecstatic, the thing looked awesome! The turnbuckles looked very much like the real thing you saw on TV, the turnbuckles themselves, the pads and the middle parts that connected the two were all spot on, the ring looked a decent size, it had the corner steel steps and there was an outside ring mat that was also a good size. Damn was I excited to finally get it for my figures!
A couple of days before my birthday I went with my mum into town to the figure shop to pick it up, it looked awesome and I was really looking forward to opening it on my birthday. March 28, 2001 and now 9 years old, I got up during the night because I couldn't wait any longer and had to see thing! I opened the box up and after a few moments my excitement turned to deflation.
The real product was vastly different to the picture on the box. The turnbuckles were not the same and weren't anywhere near as realistic. The ring was smaller. It had 2 visible sensors on it for the electronic aspects of it which weren't visible ANYWHERE on the pictures of it. There were no corner 2 part ring steps but instead a single piece with 3 steps that clicked onto the middle of the apron on the side of the ring. And the mat on the outside was also smaller and unrealistic looking in comparison to the proto. I felt so ing cheated! Talk about false advertising. I remember fetching my Scotty 2 Hotty figure from my room to compare the size of him to the ring, I laid the figure down on the ring and it took up over half the ring! I was pretty pissed off at the figure makers, I ended up just going back to bed after that on a complete downer.
That day I went to school and had time to absorb it and was in a much better mood as the day went on. Once I got home and set the arena up I was feeling much better about the situation. I hadn't let on to my mum that I was annoyed because I didn't want to seem ungrateful after she had paid £50 for the thing. I got accustomed to it that day and actually ended up really enjoying playing with it. The sounds, music and commentary as you played matches with your figures on it were very cool. It was a lot like the Titantron: you put your figure's foot on the steps and JR & King would say something about that superstar. It would react to you hitting the mat, the turnbuckles, leaving the ring, hitting the ropes and pinfalls etc, I thought that was awesome and got a lot of enjoyment out of it that year.
But I would very much like to say, you Jakks for almost ruining my 9th birthday. You cheap, false advertising, lying, thieving c*nts!
