Are you talking about that Spector Creative channel on Youtube? He has a lot of great insight on the toy industry. For toylines to get shelf space and sell at mass retail, it needs TV or a movie to promote it and MOTU doesnt really have that. Indeed I am The same logic can apply to legends - while wwe technically have a tv show it doesn’t show the legends on a week to week basis Exactly. Mattel has to make figures of wrestlers currently on TV first over legends from decades ago.

Why would Mattel want to change the structure of their WWE agreement? Agreeing to sign individual wrestlers for figures means they would be taking on even more expenses to pay for Scott Steiner or Kurt Angle or whoever. Their deal is working fine as it is and the executives aren’t going to care if we don’t have a Brian Pillman to go with Stunning Steve Austin because they only care about the money.

i do hope QC can be better moving fwd though. they have had rough patches over the years, and it seemed to crop up again lately. mostly with mismatching skin tones. but im glad to see them get extended. like many , i prob wwould consider moving on from wrestling figures if they didnt.

I mostly buy old school wrestlers these days, and get more excited about the Goon than I would Roman Reigns.
However, I happened to be in Smyths last week when a new WWE fan was buying his first ever Elite - I over heard that all he wanted was a Drew McIntyre or Bobby Lashley (he got a Drew).
We may love the legends and UE, however, there is a big reason why Basics make up at least 50% of retail space for wrestling figures.

Further to the above....
When I started collecting Hasbros in 1991 I'd would have been very strange if Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammarrino and Gorgeous George were a major part of the line. And I'd have had no interest in them.

Very happy about this. Like others have mentioned, I do hope Mattel was able to at least gain a little bit of "flexibility" when it comes to signing legends outside of the official WWE legends deals. I'm not asking for an exclusive set solely dedicated to the REPO MAN but after 10 years the ability to dig into some deeper cuts/expand the character selection would really freshen things up.

I was actually curious if Mattel even wanted to continue with the deal. The license is definitely not as valuable now as it was 11 years ago. Viewership and talent roster is way down from what it was then. This couldn’t be any farther from the truth

Disappointing news for me, was really hoping someone else would take over the license as I haven't been the biggest fan of Mattel's recent corner cutting when it comes to things like Kane's arm, but the biggest frustration is their lack of QC. My Elite 89 McIntyre, Lashley, and Priest all have misaligned face printing. It's at the point where it's simply inexcusable, especially since I NEVER have this issue with any other figure line. Hopefully these sorts of issues are addressed since they've renewed the licencing agreement, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

Their deal is working fine as it is and the executives aren’t going to care if we don’t have a Brian Pillman to go with Stunning Steve Austin because they only care about the money. Just to play devil's advocate ... it'll be a stunner if Jeremy doesn't do a deep legends line with the AEW brand eventually. You don't think Mattel would rather be making money off some of the name legends that are still out there (Steiners, etc.) instead of a competitor in Jazwares? I think that's something that could have potentially been brought up in negotiations. Steve has said that WWE is well aware of Mattel's desire to go deep and use fresh names. And there's certainly been more of a willingness lately to do that with the legends they do have under contract (like, we're getting a freaking Goon figure, lol). It's probably just a pipe dream on my part because there's people well above Steve and Bill making those decisions. But I don't think it's out of line for the Mattel creative team to make a push in that area. Guys like Bret and Warrior were signed separately by Mattel at the very start of the Mattel line when things worked differently; they did not come via WWE legends deals. And right now it's hard to picture this Mattel line without Warrior figures, for example.

very happy about this. with the current climate of the world and the fact im getting older, im not about to start an entirely new collection. keep this going for as long as possible.
strange though that it just says "multi-year extension" and not an actual number

I don't understand why some people want Mattel to lose the license so bad, just because they won't make some obscure 80's jobber who only had 2 matches, or because a figure's hair is 1 shade darker than it is in real life
Do you really think Mattel losing the license means whatever company they would give it to will make Rugged Ronnie Garvin, Moondog Rex, The Missing Link etc.? they would make all the current names and mostly the legends Mattel have made
We just gotta face it, Mattel has made most of the legends they can make at the moment, the biggest names they haven't made are either on bad terms, or not signed to a deal, we'll get First Time In The Line flashbacks every now and then, like with The Goon and Chief Jay Strongbow
I'd love to see guys like Haku, Mr.Fuji, The Steiners, Hercules etc., but it is what it is

Viewership and talent roster is way down from what it was then. This couldn’t be any farther from the truth in 2009 when they first reached a deal Raw was averaging roughly 5 million viewers a week, Smackdown (on cable) 3.5 million, ECW (on syfy) 1.5 million. Going back to 2019 to get a decent pre-pandemic number Raw roughly 2.5 million, 2.2 SD (on network TV), NXT (on USA) 800,000. ECW on syfy at times was getting better numbers than SD on Fox. *was only on Fox since Oct so taking that into consideration and removing the episodes airing on FS1 and the premiere that skewed higher than normal it averaged maybe around 2.5 million.

There's a bunch of obscure legends that I want Mattel to make but I don't get annoyed that they don't make a Big Bully Busick, Amish Roadkill and Nailz, Do I want them badly, yes. However I don't bitch and moan and complain about it.

What I want is for WWE & Mattel to come to an agreement about getting new legends figures made. There are a TON of big name stars from the 80’s & 90’s that have not had figures made. Not jobbers like you assume we’re talking about.
